So you want to know how to learn Spanish but are a little daunted by the whole prospect? Well it may be comforting to know that whether you just want to learn enough to be able to go into a bar to order a coffee or a beer, or whether you are looking to speaking the language fluently, there will be a way of learning to suit your needs.

Understanding your learning needs
When it comes to knowing how to learn Spanish it’s a good idea to have a clear idea in your mind of what you would like to use the language for. There are courses out there that offer basic Spanish and they can get you speaking it after a few weeks. This type of learning is a great way of getting you to converse fairly quickly, especially if you are looking to get to grips with a few key phrases or sentences that will get you by if you are on vacation or travelling. On the other hand if you are looking to move to a Spanish speaking country or would like to be able to speak the language well there are more in depth ways of learning. So have a think about what you want to get out of your learning and this should help you understand how in depth your course needs to be.

Once you have a better understanding your learning needs, the next question you might want to ask is which way am I going to learn?

You are probably aware that there are a plethora of ways in which you can learn to speak the language, so  you really need to play to your learning strengths. By this I mean try to have an understanding of the best way that you learn. With this in mind here are some ways in which you can be taught.

Written learning
This is a great way to learn if you enjoy being taught through reading. It doesn’t have to be simply a book full of verbs and their meanings, as even the most ardent of learners would soon give up. Instead, one of the best ways to be taught by written learning is through scenarios, and there are many books which use this approach. For example, there may be some dialogue on a page about a family going on holiday, or a couple ordering a meal or even a newspaper article. One page is generally written in Spanish and the other is written in English. The idea is that you read the Spanish and then read the English equivalent. By making assimilations and repetition you can take the words and sentences in and they will stick.

Pros -  The benefits of written learning are that you can learn at your own pace and you can keep going back to it if you haven’t quite grasped it. It’s great if you are looking to learn some basics in a short space of time and you can also take it with you and learn wherever you like. The other benefit is the low cost involved.

Cons -  The negatives of this type of learning is that it doesn’t give you enough flexibility and can only offer limited learning potential. By this I mean that it is okay learning how to order a drink in a bar or how to  buy a train ticket per say, and in this sense it’s great for that. However when it comes to conversational Spanish when you have to start thinking about sentence structure, then this is going to prove much more tricky as tenses and verb endings will come into play.
