If you study Spanish, speaking the language is probably the most important aspect of learning the language. However, a lot of people learning the Spanish language have problems when they come to actually conversing . More often than not the problems stem from a lack of confidence, or rather a fear of looking stupid. This fear has to be overcome as conversing in Spanish is one of the quickest ways to learn. Simply by trying to speak it, you can pick up on things such as pronunciation, sentence structure and in some cases common slang words or colloquialisms, which may or may not normally be taught.

Social groups
A great way in which to learn to speak Spanish is by getting together with a group of like minded people who are also trying to learn the language. Speaking Spanish over a cup of coffee at someone’s house, or by meeting up in the local cafe, creates a relaxed atmosphere in which you can converse. The subject matter isn’t important but it is always best to try to keep it informal. If you don’t know of anybody to converse with, then there are plenty of local groups advertised on the internet. If there aren’t any in your area then why not start a group yourself.
Intercambios
Intercambios are another great way to help you understand how to speak Spanish. Intercambios are generally native Spanish speakers who are looking to improve their English skills. The idea behind it is that you both converse in a ‘chat room’ style way over the internet and by doing this you can reply to questions or tell them about yourself in Spanish. If you are unsure of a word or how to phrase something, then there is always the Google translation system. Although not perfect, it may get you out of a fix. As you get more proficient at seeing words and sentences written down in Spanish it will become that much easier to speak.
Foreign exchange programs
If you have the time to spare, then one of the great ways to learn how to speak Spanish is through a foreign exchange program. There are some excellent companies who will hook you up with a Spanish speaking family either in Latin America or Europe. The idea is that you simply have to find your airfare and then you teach the family English and they teach you Spanish, in return for bed and board. By immersing yourself in the culture, it is indeed possible to pick up the language that much quicker.
As you can see there are many ways of learning how to speak Spanish and they all have one thing in common, in that they all have the ability to rapidly improve your Spanish language skills. Whichever method you choose, one of the best ways to learn is by making mistakes, so if you say something that’s not grammatically correct or simply doesn’t make sense, then try not to fret over it. Simply learn from it and move on. At the end of the day, if you can make your learning processes fun, then you are halfway towards achieving your end goal.
